The 15th annual Richmond Folk Festival is right around the corner - and if your office is feeling the end-of-summer blues, it’s the perfect opportunity to instill some fall spirit by taking your office to Folk Fest on Friday, October 11th.
The first night of Folk Fest is always punctuated with a charged atmosphere unique to Fridays - the skies darkening earlier as autumn takes hold, everyone feeling a wave of relaxation as the week comes to a close - the excitement is palpable as the first musical notes dance through the air, echoing throughout Brown’s Isle and up 3rd and 5th streets.
If you’ve been searching for the perfect party environment for your office, Folk Fest is your answer. With food, beverages, and entertainment provided, the east coast’s biggest folk music festival is a world class party with not that much expense on your office’s party budget. The food is fantastic (I always have to grab a samosa from Indian K’raja’s truck) and the beverages hail from some of Virginia’s best craft breweries, and it’s all accompanied by musicians, artists, and dancers from around the world.
Without further ado, here are three acts you don’t want to miss on Friday:
Taking the Altria stage at 6:30, CASYM is the perfect way to start your Friday night’s festivities. From New York, New York, this 55-gallon steel drum orchestra was founded in 1983, and stands for Caribbean American Sports and Cultural Movement. While in Richmond, 30 orchestra members will take the stage to play arrangements of jazz, reggae, classical, calypso, and soca.
Born and raised in Walkertown, North Carolina, Riley Baugus has been immersed in the culture of Appalachian music since he was a child. Living in Walkerstown his whole life, Riley Baugus has cut out a name for himself as a professional musician and instrument builder. He has contributed to the Academy Award winning film Cold Mountain, the Grammy winning Rising Sand, and has put out a critically acclaimed album, Long Steel Rail. You’ll find Riley Baugus at the Costar Stage starting at 8:30.
Taking the stage at the Dominion Energy Dance Pavilion at 9:00, one of the most famous (and best) cajun bands in the world will bring the heat to Richmond Folk Fest. The first cajun band to win a Grammy Award in 1998, the band has since added a second to their collection, and have been featured in many soundtracks for both film and television.
