There’s been a lot of talk in the news about our planet recently. If there’s one thing that’s certain, it’s that the future is uncertain. So, in preparation for possibly the most important Earth Day yet, we’re here to give you 10 ideas for celebrating earth day at the office!
There’s no better way to appreciate nature than by getting out there and enjoying it. The Greater Richmond area has over 50 parks - by bringing your office out to one, not only do your employees get a little break from the day-to-day grind (and not to mention a little sun), they get the opportunity to reconnect with the earth in a way that can only be achieved by interacting with it.
It could be a movie, it could be a workshop - as long as it gets your team talking about the environment, you’ve succeeded. This can even be led by an employee - there’s usually at least one person in the office who’s always stopping people in the break room to talk about the latest climate news. Now, they can get it all out of their system in one event!
There’s a lot of ways you can go about this - have your social media team interrupt their usual content with posts focused on our planet, partner with another company to help you engage with customers in a dialogue about what steps in sustainability your business has taken recently. Customers, and employees, for that matter, appreciate transparency.
Who can recycle the most plastic in one week? Who carpooled the most this month? Which employee has racked up the most miles biking or walking to work? Which department ditched the most single-use water bottles in favor of reusable? There’s plenty of team-building, environmentally friendly competitions your company can host without interrupting workflow.
Set a sustainability goal for your company for an entire year. Compare your results to last year, and reward and incentivize forward progress. If that doesn’t work with your needs, give each department a specific sustainability goal - set a goal of reducing paper waste in your marketing department, or a goal for your sales department to find green-minded clients.
Here’s an interesting fact: Did you know 100% of all volunteer opportunities are on earth? I know, right?! A great way to show the earth you care is by volunteering for a sustainable farming operation - luckily, Richmond has Shalom Farms nearby.
The earth has given us seven billion years - take one day from your regular work schedule and get everyone on board. The only goal for the day - to find ways, and come up with new ways, to create a more sustainable business model. This could include finding new vendors with a greener mission than your current ones, replacing all of your fluorescent lights with LEDs, switching out plastic forks for reusable ones - anything that you can do to make a greener company, do. And make sure your employees know you’ll take their ideas into consideration - they definitely surprise you.
Celebrate by doing
You’ll notice that all of these suggestions, rather than the usual model of celebration, focus on accomplishing a task or goal - why? Because just like every day is children’s day, so to is every day people’s day - so once a year, let’s show some love to our planet, and get the whole office engaged and excited as well!
