Mercury Hall Q&A: Courtney Landers
Following a five year career planning + designing events, I fell for Mercury Hall and all its charm the minute I laid eyes on it and have been managing the ins and outs since 2011. I love people, southern hospitality and design, and when all three collide it just the perfect harmony at the hall. I enjoy the diverse events we host each year and all the memories the space has held for so many of our friends. I love tickling my toddler (Tripp), traveling with my husband, mexican martinis, being by the water, peonies and the color aqua.
Why did the owners decide to open Mercury Hall?
We bought the chapel in 1996 from a small church in Mercury, Texas and moved it to its current location (four acres off of S. First) in 1997 where it was extensively renovated. It was such a beautiful building and still had so much life to give. We originally meant for it to be a South Austin music venue, but quickly guests asked to get married here and host other events so we host more weddings + social events than performances now.
A message for locals looking for private event ideas?
Think outside the box! Austin has such a unique culture and I think its fun to incorporate aspects of Austin into your event at the hall. We've had clients host an ACL themed bat mitzvah, clients with an electric bull riding area in the courtyard and even tattoo artists giving out legit tattoos during the event. We love food trucks too!
What is your most popular space at your venue and what is your own personal favorite?
Goodness, hard to say. Most clients love the actual indoor space of the hall itself and the stain glass windows. Its just a blank canvas with loads of character and I've seen clients stay true and classic and clients create all sorts of installations and go crazy with color. It just has so much diversity in style. My personal favorite might be the rock garden courtyard. It has contemporary stone walkway through it, pebble floor and lush gardens all around. With the festoon lighting overhead, its just plain dreamy in the afternoons and evenings.
What is your favorite part about helping people plan their private events at Mercury Hall?
I love people, plain and simple. I hope everyone that comes to the hall - client or guest - feels welcome. Its a joy to work with so many diverse clients, budgets, styles and personalities.
What does your brand mean to you?
The Mercury Hall brand is historical and classic, yet eclectic/bohemian at times. To me it is a classic, historical space that can transcend any style and budget - a blank canvas with history and charm.
What would you want someone to know before planning an event at Mercury Hall?
We try to keep Mercury Hall open to all sorts of styles and budgets, so with our venue the client brings in all of the vendors of their choice. It will require a little leg work for the client on picking clients, but we like this because clients can make a truly customized event based on their style and budget. We have, however, recently launched a corporate meeting package brochure, where we offer more full service options to help these meeting planners.
